Wouldn't you agree that this sort of conversion should not have to be done in the Java EE space?

Absolutely. Although the Java promise of write once/run eveywhere has largely been honoured, this is not
the case for deployment. EJB 3 deployment is simpler than in EJB 2.x but it's still a non-trivial matter for most Java EE applications, so further simplification and standardization of the deployment process is really needed.
